The Conductance of Tetraalkylammonium Iodides in Aqueous Proline and Hydroxyproline Solutions

The densi ty, viscosity a n d dielectric cons tan t of aqueous prol ine a n d hydroxypro l ine solut ions have been de te rmined a t 25 °C. The resul ts a p p e a r t o indicate t h a t t h e two aminoac ids have a des t ruc t ive effect on t h e molecular wa te r aggregates . The equivalent conduc tance of t e t r a m e t h y l a m m o n i u m iodide a n d t e t r a b u t y l a m m o n i u m iodide in aqueous proline a n d hydroxypro l ine solut ions has been measu red a t 25°C. T h e aminoac ids increase the viscosity of t h e solutions a n d decrease t h e l imit ing equiva len t conduc tance of t h e two electrolytes. E lec t ros ta t i c in terac t ions of t h e iodide ions wi th t h e wate r molecules a n d hydrophobic in terac t ions of t h e t e t r a a l k y l a m m o n i u m ions w i t h t h e aminoacids also seem t o af fect t he conductomet r ic behav iour of the e lectrolytes .
